NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft has been on a mission since its launch in 1977 to explore the far reaches of our solar system and beyond. Recently, the spacecraft made an astounding discovery of an unidentified force in outer space, leaving scientists puzzled and excited.\
But, before we dive into this enigmatic force, let’s first understand what Voyager 2 is and its purpose. Voyager 2 was launched with the primary objective of exploring the outer planets of our solar system, including Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. After completing its initial mission, Voyager 2 became the second artificial object after Voyager 1 to continue its journey into interstellar space.
Out of all the thousands of items sent into space, only five human-made spacecraft have had enough energy to escape the gravitational pull of our solar system. Pioneer 10 and 11, Voyager 1 and 2, and New Horizons have been able to reach escape velocity from our sun, requiring both rapid launch speeds and gravitational assistance from other planets.
Although Pioneers 10 and 11 are no longer in operation, both Voyager spacecraft and New Horizons are still operational, with Voyager 1 being the most distant at a distance of 22 billion kilometers from Earth.
Despite being a remarkable feat, communicating with the Voyager spacecraft is not an easy task. The distance, time, and power constraints make it challenging to send and receive messages at cosmic distances. It takes longer for signals to reach the spacecraft, and the power of the signal decreases as the distance increases.
Now, coming back to the recent discovery made by Voyager 2, scientists have uncovered an unidentified force in outer space, leaving them baffled and excited.
